Dr.Lipp talks to Lauren Naylor about all things beauty, fave makeup products, and more!
Can you tell us about the chosen look? What was the inspiration for it?
My friend @HawkMurphy (Joe) asked if he could ‘borrow me’ to shoot with his new camera. I came out of hibernation and we created some really nice editorial shots. To me, I was channeling ‘Villanelle’ from Killing Eve with the big pink ruffle top, but I wanted my skin and makeup to be dewy, clear, glossy with an overall natural ‘polished’ finish. I wanted to create a ‘you, only better’ vibe!
What products did you use to create the look?
I used MAC face and body in C3 (cool neutral), I focus on hydrating light face/foundation products and hate feeling caked. I avoided powder, and even concealer would be very minimal and only on problem areas such as my high colour cheeks. I really like the glossier stretch concealer as it feels more like a medium coverage foundation than a concealer, I use a fluffy brush to give a natural finish to skin. I obviously adapt makeup for clients, but if you’re dehydrated, more mature etc I always stick to hydrating bases and creamy products so they don’t sit in fine lines and creases. Mascara wise, I love Monsieur big by Lancome and Marc Jacobs Lash’d lengthening – both give insanely long, sooty lashes, which, if everything else is paired down is mega important. I don’t mind mixing two to get an extra boost, which I did here. As long as there are no clumps! I tend to sneak a bit of Mac teddy liner into the upper and lower lash line, it has a soft, bronze shimmer to it and pops the eye.
You can’t tell but I buffed in a nude lip liner (I like cacao by makeup forever, or beech by body shop) then I add a layer of Dr.Lipp Original Nipple Balm which I discovered as a new mum, and love, love, love.
Then I used half and half rich, buttery lipstick – more for hydration and a shot of toffee toned colour. I’ll always set my makeup with a spray for extra gloss, and I’m really loving Danessa Myricks wet balm from algorithum on the high points of the face. It’s insanely good! I used a strong blusher over bronzer, as I didn’t want a contoured finish – so I used a mix of creamy bread and butter (by DM again) and topped up with mac Melba onto the apples and then blended out softly. Eyebrows, I’m now into more fluffier and use soap brows, but I’m a huge fan of the Marc Jacobs’s duo pencil with gel and pencil – I’ve just repurchased (and have a great reel of me using it). I tend to then use a pencil brush, and dark brown eyeshadow to push darker shadow into my brows (whilst I can’t have my brows tinted!)

Any tips for anyone at home wanting to recreate a similar look?
Focus on the points you want to highlight – what works for one person, may not necessarily for another. So for instance to find your ultimate nude lip shade, don’t be afraid to mix, to play, to layer up products. I love to mix and match tones, and although this look doesn’t use any bright, adventurous colour a lot of ‘play’ has gone into it. Enjoy the experimenting to find your perfect shade.
What would you say your signature beauty look is?
Boring! Ha ha. No, I think glossy! I love if someone compliments me on my skin – then I know I’ve got it right.
Here at Dr.Lipp, we make multi-use skincare solutions to keep life simple and reduce our carbon footprint – do you think it’s important to streamline your beauty kit?
Totally, I’ve just had a huge clear out of my kit and I give a lot away (if it hasn’t passed it’s sell by date!) Obviously I need a lot to cater for all skin-tones. But for me personally, I can fit my basic/ multi-tasking products into a tiny tiny handbag. I love multi-use items because as a mum they are equally as much as a godsend as being much kinder on the environment.
What would you be doing if you were not a makeup artist?
Well I’m a writer/brand consultant – with 2020 throwing us onto different paths we’ve all had to adapt. Although, if I’m honest I’d love to be on tv talking all things beauty (I auditioned once, and got a callback. I’m still waiting!!!)
What items should everyone have in their kit?
A good eyebrow pencil/product. A multitasking balm for brows, lips, elbows, anything! A hydrating spray A very gentle efficacious makeup remover (for multiple makeup changes) A mascara! (Which I think is very subjective) I’m always on the quest to find ‘the one’ and environmentally friendly bamboo Q-tips.
Who is your dream client?
Guys! Ha ha. I’ve done lots of celebrity males, but they’re so easy, so overwhelmed, subservient and really rather cute as you poke and prod them! I won’t mention the time I had to tan someone’s two-tone legs mid shoot for an almost naked shoot while he held his bits. It was mortifying! Ha ha.
Do you have any career highlights so far?
I actually love working on weddings, as you get to know the brides over time. So it’s really adorable seeing them go off to wed, the excitement is palpable. I used to art direct and be a beauty editor for a national newspaper travelling all over the globe, so for me that was incredible. NY fashion week was always the best!
What is a day in the life like for you?
Very different these days, but we’re all having to adapt. My least favourite part is washing my mountains of brushes!
What is the best piece of beauty advice you ever received and what is the best piece you could give?
Use SPF all year round. I’m always harping on about this. Dr Murad is my go to. It easily layers under makeup. Otherwise I use a tinted Dr Perricone product with SPF30 in. I like to think this has worked! Even early 20’s I used tinted moisturiser with SPF. Otherwise, be kind, it really shows true beauty!
What are your favourite uses for Dr.Lipp?
I have rather juicy and dry lips – so for me it’s lips every time! However, now I can’t have brow lamination a little dot brushed into brows on a spoolie goes a long way!
